Find Minnetonka Unclaimed Money
Minnetonka residents can search for unclaimed money at no charge through Minnesota's state portal, run by the Department of Commerce. Minnetonka sits in western Hennepin County just west of Minneapolis, and many current and past residents may have property in the system without realizing it. The search is free and open to anyone. You can look up your own name, former names, and the names of family members in just a few minutes.
Minnetonka Overview
How to Search Minnetonka Unclaimed Money
There is no Minnetonka city database for unclaimed money. Hennepin County doesn't maintain one either. All unclaimed property searches in Minnesota go through the state system. The Minnesota Department of Commerce holds every reported asset until the rightful owner comes forward. There's no time limit. Property is kept in the system indefinitely, even if it was reported years ago.
Visit minnesota.findyourunclaimedproperty.com to start. Enter your first and last name. No account is needed just to search. Results show the original owner name, type of property, and a value or description. If you find a match, you can start the claim process directly from the results page. The search covers the entire state, so accounts from anywhere in Minnesota can appear in your results, not just ones tied to Minnetonka addresses.
It helps to be thorough with name variations. Try your name in multiple formats, including with and without a middle name or initial. Search under maiden names and any other legal names you've used. If you have moved around Hennepin County or lived in multiple cities over the years, all of those old accounts roll into the same state database. It's also worth running searches on deceased parents or grandparents. Heirs can file claims for property belonging to a relative who has passed, and this is one of the most common ways people discover unclaimed funds they didn't know existed.

Minnetonka Unclaimed Property Types
The Minnesota Department of Commerce collects unclaimed property from banks, credit unions, insurance carriers, brokerage firms, employers, utilities, and retailers across the state. Most assets sit dormant for three years before the holder must report and transfer them to the state. Safe deposit box contents have a longer dormancy period of five years. Once the state receives the funds, they remain available in the database until a valid claim is filed.
For Minnetonka residents, old bank and credit union accounts are among the most common unclaimed assets. West metro residents have often moved between cities, and accounts opened years ago at banks that have since merged or closed sometimes end up in the state system. Insurance proceeds are another major category. Life insurance benefits, matured annuities, and uncashed premium refunds all get reported if the company loses contact with the policyholder or beneficiary. Stock shares and dividends can also go unclaimed when a company changes hands or a shareholder stops tracking their account.
Utility deposits show up frequently too. When someone moves and forgets to collect a refund, or when the utility company can't locate the customer at a new address, those deposits go to the state. Same goes for customer overpayments on utility bills, retail purchases, and other services. Any of these could appear under your name in the state database.
Minnetonka Claim Process Step by Step
Filing a claim in Minnetonka follows the same four-step process used across all of Minnesota. No office visit is required, and the process is fully free.
Step one is to search and find a matching record. Go to the state portal, enter your name, and review the results. Step two is to file the claim. Set up an account on the portal and complete a claim form for each match you want to pursue. The system issues a Claim ID so you can monitor your case. Step three involves submitting any documentation the state requests. This often includes a copy of a government-issued photo ID, proof of your Social Security number, and something that ties you to the original account, like an old statement or a prior address on file. If you're filing on behalf of a deceased person, you'll likely need a death certificate and documents showing your legal standing as an heir or executor. Step four is to track the claim. Processing takes up to 90 days from the time the state receives a complete file.
There is no fee. The state does not charge anything to search or to file a claim, and it doesn't take a percentage of what you recover. If you need assistance during the process, contact the Department of Commerce at 651-539-1545 or toll-free at 1-800-925-5668. You can also email unclaimed.property@state.mn.us or write to 85 7th Place East, Suite 280, St. Paul, MN 55101.

Minnesota Law for Minnetonka Residents
Minnesota's unclaimed property program is built on Chapter 345 of the Minnesota Statutes. This chapter sets the rules for dormancy periods, annual reporting by holders, owner notice requirements, and the state's obligations once funds are transferred. It applies statewide, covering every city in Hennepin County including Minnetonka.
Under section 345.41, holders of dormant property must file reports with the Commerce Department on an annual basis. Most holders face a November 1 deadline. Life insurance companies report by October 1. If the property is worth $100 or more, the holder must send a written notice to the owner at least 120 days before the report is filed. This notice gives the owner a final opportunity to respond and prevent the transfer. Many people never see these notices, which is why accounts end up in the state database in the first place.
Section 345.55 sets out penalties for holders who fail to file on time or who report incorrectly. A 2019 update to Minnesota law requires the state to pay interest on interest-bearing accounts it holds. If the original account was a savings account or other interest-bearing instrument, the recovered amount may include interest earned while the state held the funds.
